Rambam's Awful Film Club met on Wednesday and was an absolute success.
The club, which meets one or two times each year, is run by Henach Barningham and Akiva Leider. In true Awful Film Club tradition, they selected an awful movie in secret, only revealing it immediately before watching it.
This year's meeting featured the absolute disaster that is War of the Worlds (2025). Intended to be an adaptation of the 1898 novel of the same name by H. G. Wells, the movie lacks any coherent connection to its source material. Unfilmed during the COVID-19 pandemic, it was created under the assumption that traditional movie production might no longer be possible. As a result, it is shot entirely through video calls between characters, with no more than two appearing in the same room at once.
That, combined with the horrendous acting throughout, including rapper Ice Cube as the protagonist, made for a truly painful viewing experience, which, of course, is exactly the point of the club.
Environic as it may sound, everyone agreed that the movie was so bad that the club's first meeting of the year was a complete success.
