This past Tuesday evening, from 6:00 PM to 10:00 PM on Zoom, Rambam Mesivta was represented at a National Qualifier International Extemp tournament, where students competed in multiple rounds of prepared speaking on global issues. International Extemp requires students to select one of several prompts, research it within thirty minutes using precollected sources, and deliver a seven-minute speech answering the question with a clear thesis, structured arguments, and sourced evidence. Unlike many other speech events, it emphasizes not only delivery but also depth of knowledge on current international affairs, including economics, geopolitics, and global policy. Throughout the tournament, topics included questions such as how cheaper solar energy is affecting the global economy and whether Nigeria's recent economic reforms are working. These prompts required analysis of real-time developments, including energy market shifts, inflation, currency policy, and the tradeoffs between economic stabilization and short-term hardship. Competitors were expected to interpret data, weigh outcomes, and present a clear, defensible answer under time pressure. Congratulations to Yosef Harris (12th), the sole representative from Rambam, who advanced through all rounds and earned First Alternate.
